As a child, Jason began collecting pipes and has accumulated a massive and diverse collection. While in the process of attempting to quit smoking cigarettes, he rediscovered his love of pipe smoking.
In 2006, Jason joined The Arizona Pipe Club and soon found his way to The Pipe Maker's Emporium, located in Phoenix. The Pipe Maker's Emporium is owned by Paul Hildebrand, a local businessman and great pipe carver in his own right. Jason learned that Paul teaches quarterly classes on pipe carving and eagerly signed-up. Following completion of the class, Paul invited Jason to join himself and other outstanding Arizona pipe carvers Horace DeJarnett, Ryan Quagliata and Kim Kendall to come together each Saturday to share ideas and make pipes. Horace refers to the group as the "spit and whittle club." Jason considers these men to be friends and a great source of inspiration.
Since joining the group, Jason's individual pipe carving style has become clear. His pipes are generally larger than average and many are sharply angled versions of traditional pipe shapes. Jason also tries his best to create new shapes and loves incorporating wood inserts and other materials into his designs. He also enjoys making matching pipe stands and tampers. Additionally, Jason titles every pipe with a special name. He is working on a grading system, but needs to make more pipes before he can fairly assign a grade to each creation.
At this point, Jason anticipates carving between 25 and 50 pipes per year. Each pipe includes an identification card citing all of the pipe's specifications, from length, height and wood used, to a description of the stain. Each pipe is laser engraved with the Watrock logo and the pipe's number and year created. Jason also will take custom orders.
Through his commitment, creativity, business experience, and expertise, Jason hopes to establish a relationship with his customers that will last a lifetime!
